East Lansing police are warning residents about a phone scam involving people impersonating police officers.

According to police, scammers are telling victims they have an outstanding warrant and demanding payment by phone or wire transfer.

Police emphasize that actual officers do not demand payment for warrants and do not accept warrant payments over the phone or online.

The scammers have reportedly claimed to be with the "East Lansing Sheriff's Office," an agency that does not exist.
